Pi Day

If you haven't picked up on this yet, I am a nerd. I love math and love themed parties. So what is better than Pi Day? Not much. A themed math party that happens each year that gives you the excuse to eat pie? Pretty Awesome!!

This year was particularly awesome because the date was 3/14/15. For those of you not familiar with the number pi the first 10 digits of pi are 3.141592653...

I had a Pi Party and made some Turkey Pot Pi. Aren't they pretty? I cut the numbers and pi out without any guide and am pleased with how they turned out.
We also had some pi jello and pi brownies as well. Did I mention I like themed parties? We had lots of round food items because pi comes from circles.
And I'm nerd enough that I made all my friends count down and toast at Pi second. Which was at 9:26:53.

We had a pie eating contest where 4 brave souls participated, Jon, Nicole, Luis, and myself.

I quickly learned I am not so good at pie eating contests. But I had never tried it so how was I to know until I tried. Here are some great actions shots of the contest.
Nicole
Jon assisted by his wife Laura.

 Luis
I believe Luis was declared the winner though it is still up for debate about whether or not he used his hands.

All the contestants with their messy or not so messy faces. And photo bomber Josh.
Here is the crew of attendees at Pi Day minus Amanda who was talking the pictures.
From left to right: Becky Chapman, Luis Chavez, Laura Frazier, Nicole Myers, Jon Frazier, Jessica Dupaix, Rachel Brady, Peter Shiozawa, Stacy Mouton, Jose Galvez, Josh Hansen, Ali and Shannon.
Remember these two. This won't be the last time you see them covered in stuff.
After the Pie Eating Contest we threw pies in each other's faces.
Jon was our first volunteer. His wife Laura got to through the first pies.
The plates were light and hard to aim but she got him pretty good after a practice or two. I believe this was the best legitimate through of the evening.
I love this action shot with the cream flying through the air.

These two covered again.
Then it was my turn to get pies in the face.-
Stacy got the first try at hitting me.
 And she missed.
It looks like she is about to get me in this pic.
 But she missed again.
Ali was next. I love these pictures with the cream flying.
Shannon getting ready to through at Ali.
 It's snowing.

Stacy was the last one up for some pie in the face.

I think she got covered the best of everyone. I love the smile peeking through.

I think we ended up with more on the ground then anywhere else but it was lots of fun.
I had a super fun Pi Day this year and think everyone else did as well. Or they at least played along. Until next year Pi Day. Thanks for all the nerdy fun!

30 on 30

I decided that I wanted to do something fun for my 30th birthday because it is a significant milestone birthday. After some thought and discussion with my roommate I settled on doing 30 things of 30 on my 30th birthday.

My friend Amanda and I share a birthday so we decided to hang out and have some birthday fun together. She joined me on some of my 30 things of 30 and did some of them 24 times for her birthday.
Here is a list of what I did.

3. Did my hair with 30 twist in it.

4. Ate 30 bites of cereal.

27. Stacked 30 cups
28. Gave 30 seconds worth of hugs. I wanted to do give 30 hugs but didn't come across as many people to do this so I changed it to count the seconds instead.
29. Chatred with friend for 30 minutes
30. Tossed the chicken from Pitchin Chickens 30 times.

The next step is to do 40 by 40. I am making a list of 40 different things or goals I want to do by the time I turn 40. Here is a sample of some I have thought of so far.

1. I want to throw one penny in 40 different fountains each in a different city.
2. I want to make 40 costumes from scratch.

We are starting a 40 by 40 movement. Join us in it and post your pictures. If you have past 40 you can do it for whatever age you are at.

Lunar Eclipse

The weather FINALLY cooperated and I was able to watch the lunar eclipse this morning.   I had some fun with my camera taking these photos of it. The photos captured a different view than what my eye saw. Sometimes I liked what the camera captured better sometimes my eyes view was better.

I think my roommate and I may have freaked our neighbors out by sitting out in the road with my tripod. They were totally oblivious to the awesome sight happening before their eyes.

If you look carefully you can see that the bottom right corner is still light. This portion of the moon was not in the shadow yet when I finally pulled myself out of bed to look at it.
I think it is cool that you can see the stars in these photos. They were not visible to the eye. I didn't know they were there until I saw the picture.

This was the eclipse at its fullest just before it started to get light again.

You may not be able to tell very well but the following three pictures you can see the moon getting lower in the sky. I did not move my tripod between these photos.

And these pictures were only about 90 seconds apart. Watching with my eyes I couldn't tell how much the moon had moved but with the photos it is very obvious.
This was the moment(below) when we started to see the moon getting light again. You can see the top right corner is a little brighter than the rest.
 Still getting brighter.
Now it is a little more obvious.
This one is a good one to see the line of light on the moon. So neat. I love the tree in the pic too.
Big increase in how much of the moon is not in shadow anymore from the last photo. Again so gradual you don't notice much with your eyes.

Here is a different setting to see how much of the moon was in shadow. You can't see the red part just the white.
This one reminds me of a Halloween Moon. The whispy clouds around it and the trees.
I love the glow on this picture.
The red section is getting smaller.

Just about half way out now.
Here is the last of my photos as the moon sunk below the trees.

It looks like the sun rising not the eclipsed moon setting.

It was so cool to watch the lunar eclipse. I think our world is AMAZING with all its wonders. So cool. Thanks for letting me share this awesome experience with you.

While I was out there I took some photos of the stars because my camera could see ones I could not.

This one was very bright. I am wondering if it was a planet and not a star. Anyone know? It was near Orion at the time.
